THE CRUISE ABOARD MSC DIVINA - The Week that WAS!

EMBARKATION DAY!

Arrived at the Port of Miami very early in the afternoon, giving us more time to explore and enjoy the ship, and (after depositing the car at the Terminal G paid and secured parking) checked in at the Pier for MS DIVINA.  Being an MSC Yacht Club Passenger we were immediately ushered through the terminal and MSC Security.  Within 15 unbelievable minutes we were escorted to our Deck 16 stateroom. Hard to believe but our shore-side butler and escort promised this hyper speed - and delivered it.  This was the beginning of an amazing time on MSC DIVINA! Surely now, any doubts about this line, its executive and the entire shipboard team were now, once and for all erased! And, it was the same for all those enjoying the Yacht Club that we spoke to on board!

There was time while waiting for luggage for us to enjoy the intimacy and private confines of the adjacent Top Sail Bar with its panoramic view of the ship channel and the cruise vessels that lay ahead and astern of us.  The service was impeccable from the very outset and an Amstel light brew (on tap set) set the tone for Day 1.  On At Sea days-to-come we would experience the extravagance of High Tea in this very location, along with our many new friends,of many nationalities.
Butler Service at Teatime
The luggage arrived (albeit minus two garment bags) in very short order and so we unpacked.  Initially, we thought that there would not be enough room in the closet for the myriad of clothes that we had brought along, but we did just fine. Everything in a place and a place for everything!
Krysten our “Cruise Counselor” (and now Best Friend) stopped by our room for a visit and to introduce herself to us!  This was truly first!  No other line has the extraordinary personal touch that we have found with MSC – and that includes my own tenure with cruise lines, spanning the past forty years!  This Company and its team of professionals are all “hands on” and the results are evident throughout!  Their VP’s even respond to tweets and Facebook!  We tweeted a picture of Krysten Enos to her V-P and we immediately received an acknowledgement!  That is both unheard of and truly amazing!

Our first impression is that MSC Cruises and its team have strived to set themselves apart from other lines, especially those we are personally familiar with, including Cunard (Grill level).  The attention to detail and passenger interaction is absolutely above and beyond what is offered by other cruise lines.  Virtually immediately, the staff (in the Yacht Club) know your name (and by extension) your needs, wants and desires.  For example, we stupidly checked two garment bags curbside so that in transit the tags became lost and/or unreadable.

The Yacht Club has a 24 dedicated Concierge Desk. By Day, the Head Concierge is Lucia, who greeted us very warmly!  Like coming home -- and we had never been here before

Lucia, The Head Concierge with Lucille and her friends

After a quick mention to the Concierge Desk, the Butler assigned to us, took Jeff to a Deck 5 Room where the garment bags were located and promptly delivered.  Another amazing example of how MSC differs from all other competition!

Internal Swarovski Staircase - Yacht Club

After unpacking, we meandered the ship through the various wonderfully decorated lounges and bars and the expansive dual Calumet and Manitou buffets with an exceptional array of choices, includes to renowned proscuito hams and the exceptional, renowned pizzas.  While we have not discussed the many main public rooms, the overall design is truly exceptional including the "has-to-be"singled out Swarovki crystal lighted staircases that connect three deck in the Atrium and the two internal, principal deck of the Yacht Club, that can only all be described as "dazzling!"

Pizza Decision!

Unlike several of the other lines we recently traveled on there was ample seating to enjoy our snacks before continuing our exploration and tour.  This seems to be a trip where we will add an inch or two to our girths because everything is so good. (But in the final result we saved ourselves from ourselves). The international variety of choices is excellent and there is  always something new for you to sample, not only at the main buffet but especially at the vista-driven Top Sail Lounge and One Pool bar.

After a wander of the decks, we espied our New Jersey friends (from a past cruise) as we prepared for the required Boat Drill.  The only shortcoming of this experience was the “okay, now we know how to put on a life-jacket (with a crotch strap!)” was now we are here where (and how) to we get to our assigned lifeboat, if needed, followed by the crush of masses post drill all looking to get the obligatory jackets back to the stateroom!  Outside of the mandatory safety announcements in multiple languages, all the others are made in English only, while in the North American market and that is truly appreciated.  What is exceptional is that the number of announcements are kept to minimum for the quiet enjoyment of the guests.

One truly incredible feature of this “ship within a ship” MSC Yacht Club is that the forward bank of elevators has special buttons that provide “express service ” to Decks 15 and 16 where the accommodations are located! That is so nice!

We returned to the serenity of our enclave for mini-afternoon tea amid the exodus of other ships departing the Port of Miami.  It was soon time to get changed into, still casual long pants and meet our Friends for Andre Schlemmer, our Cruise Director, for his welcome and to enjoy the “Sinatra Forever” taste of the shipboard entertainment before dinner at La Muse.

The mini-show was excellent and post-cruise review, was an insight into the talented entertainment team on board and, what was to come. Andre told us all that, as this was a holiday (Easter and Passover) cruise that there were some 1000 children on board, but there are so many venues for them, based on their ages, it would not be an overwhelming experience. And, my observation is that with so many of them being well-behaved Europeans, it would be an enjoyable experience. And it truly was!

Dinner in La Muse was wonderful, each and every night!  This first night, the show ran a little over time and, being unfamiliar with this ship's protocol,  we were stressed that we would be late for dinner, so I called Guiseppe (who I referred to for most of the cruise as Francisco, the personable Maitre d’) who told me “not to worry” so I did not!
Maitre d'Hotel Guiseppe and our waiter Pasquale Cinque

Food portions are of a (good) moderate size.  Jeff had a wonderful French Onion soup, followed by by Caesar Salad with Bay Shrimp and a beautifully prepared Steak and Baked Potato for his Maim Course.  I enjoyed an appetizer of Goose Breast, the obligatory Caesar Salad and a wonderfully prepared Lamb Shank for my main course. For dessert we had Coconut Cake and Tiramisu.  Then it was back to the quiet of the exclusive Top Sail Lounge for a nightcap before retiring!  This had been an amazing introductory day to MSC CRUISES and the fabulous MSC DIVINA

DAY 2:  AT SEA  - EASTER SUNDAY

Woke up to a wonderful Caribbean sunrise to start a great day.  For me it was early, but I was not in the mood to miss anything!  So with Lucille and computer in tow, we headed for the Top Sail Lounge, our home away from home, for a cup of tea as we awaited Jeff’s arrival to go to breakfast!
We dined in La Muse and Jeff had a cordial and spirited conversation with Maitre d’ Francisco.  He makes the dining experience delightful.  For me, the “staple” of Orange Juice – fresh-squeezed followed by Eggs Benedict and a cup of Twining’s English Breakfast tea!  For Jeff, an “eye-opening” Cappuccino together with oatmeal covered in raisins and brown sugar followed by a single Egg Benedict and yet another Cappuccino.

Now we were ready to truly start the day!  A side-trip back to the room produced a copy of ship-produced USA TODAY, one of many newspapers available to MSC Yacht Club passengers, that are produced in many languages, including French, Italian, German and Swedish!  What a truly nice touch!  One more plus for this truly international, experienced, cruise line.

With the day being somewhat overcast, we explored the myriad of high-end shops that a on board. Bulgari, LaCoste and other renowned names, then it was off to visit the, for real, Candy Store!  What a selection.

We spent a couple of hours up at One Pool, exclusive to MSC Yacht Club guests, and met a number of people, all who were very friendly and welcoming.  In particular, we met a Swedish man accompanied by his 21 and 16 year old sons as well as a German family who asked us if our stuffed animals were “going to dinner tonight,” as their young daughter also had a stuffed animal she wanted to to bring to Le Muse (after seeing us there this morning!) Quite a show-stopper, for sure.

Hakan (Simon) Douglas, Guiseppe and James

Upon our return to the room to change, we found a surprise gift from MSC Cruises.  It was a large, packed Pannetone, ready for either eating aboard or for traveling home for a later pleasure.
Jeff headed off for the extraordinary spa for a massage and to enjoy all the lavishness that is the Aurea Spa spanning most of Deck 14.  He returned truly relaxed.

Aurea Spa - Treatment Room
while I headed to the Topsail Lounge for a very tasteful Angus beef mini-burger, one of many lunch options laid out for us.  While there I had a truly wonderful conversation with the two young lads, Douglas and James mentioned above.

Simonsson family with Captain

Douglas and James enjoying the Yacht Club

But being youthful and exuberant, they will (and did) opt for more active pursuits, like the golf simulator, foosball and a table tennis tournament.  The young men enjoyed the active nature of the options and were enthusiastic participants, and were a hit among the young impressionable ladies.

Afternoon delights - Yacht Club

High Tea Tower

They plan to join us for formal “high tea” later this afternoon, Like I thought they opted out of High Tea, so I enjoyed the ambience of the Top Sail Lounge and its formal service

Next it was time to dress for the first (of two)  formal nights.  Because the show was early, we had to be ready for that event before  Easter Dinner which has some unique items on the menu.  We will be joined for the show and dinner by our New Jersey friends, Rob and Jill.

Jill and Rob Rose at La Muse - EASTER

Each night, cocktail hour was to the accompaniement of this fabulous pianist.  Sometimes, later in the evening after the Dinner and Production shows, he would be in the magnificent three-deck Atrium with passenger virtuosos providing impromtu entertainment, from operas, international music.  All very cosmopolitan

Talented Cocktail Pianist - Yacht Club

Time and again, we find ourselves comparing the incredible service, hospitality and cleanliness to the iconic QUEEN ELIZABETH 2, which was always our favorite but even here MSC leads the way!  Other lines fall short of the mark and several fall far short of expectations in their delivery!  Well done and kudos to MSC Cruises.

This ship is nothing short of an array of superlatives!  For instance, even though the bathroom is functionally compact, the stainless steel, hand-held option shower has the absolute best water pressure I have encountered on any ship and, the temperature remains constant at the desired setting. The basin is of usable size and there is more than adequate shelving for toiletries and sundry supplies.  Even the newer ships I have recently traveled aboard (this past year) have unsustainable water temperature and pressure – you either are freezing or scalded!  Here it is an absolute pleasure showering.  In addition, the shower/tub has a ½ glass exterior wall to stop the bathroom from flooding and, in addition, the back wall is fully mirrored which serves as a great surface for shaving in the shower.  Another plus for MSC Cruises.

Once we were dressed  for Easter and Captain’s Gala which comprised of a meet-and-greet followed by Dinner.  Because of the European influences from many International passengers it was more upscale and dressy that other U.S-based ships and it was a refreshing change.   We attended the show WONDERLAND (a wimsical take-off on Alice( in Wonderland) with the Mad Hatter and other characters, so appropriate for Easter.  It was prefaced by the introduction of Department heads and Senior Officers.  It was a panoply of United Nations and was enhanced by the Captain making his welcome remarks in some fifteen languages, all of which he spoke fluently!

As promised by Andre, our Cruise Director, the show was resplendent with over-the-top costumes, amazing acrobats, wonder singing and much dancing and gyrations.  It was a truly unique showstopper and very much another MSC signature – not a copy of other cruise lines forms of entertainment.  Add, the massive 3,000 seat theatre which was more than adequate for all our 2nd seating guests, who enjoy their show before dinner.  The later show is for 1st Seating guests which is a nice touch.  And because of this dual performance formal, each night has a totally different production show! As a result this means that we will be enjoying new shows each day! Also so refreshing! And, the children here are so extremely well-behaved.  This to, is a refreshing and welcome change.  You would not know there are over 1,000 children on this cruise!  Again, though, the absolute serenity of MSC Yacht Club makes this even more enjoyable.

Dinner in La Muse was excellent and our guests also enjoyed it.  It was “Special
Easter menu with specialties like smoked marlin appetizer, a wonderful cold coconut soup (for me)
Easter Salad and perfectly prepared succulent lamb chops, followed by pastries and dove cake.  A unique and enjoyable meal.

Afterwards it was time to return to the Top Sail Lounge for a nightcap before going to bed, but that did not happen and we stayed late talking to the boys and their dad until they left a couple of hours later for the Galaxy Disco which was “jumping” with a wide range of  well-dressed young through older dancing their way to morning.

For us, it was time to sit on the balcony, watching the waves and a cruise ship running parallel to us, probably headed to St.Maarten, also!  What a wonderful way to end a perfect day at sea.  Full Day 1 was now complete.

DAY 3 – MONDAY – AT SEA
The day starts with opening the heavy blackout curtains to see the shining Caribbean Sea and the sun rise!  This day starts just like yesterday, perfectly too!  The ship is extremely stable but you get a gentle rocking from time to time to let you know you are afloat!  Beautiful!

First a hot shower to shake off the sleep and then down one deck to Top Sail Lounge for tea before going to Le Muse for another hearty breakfast with excellent company!

Mid-morning, Yacht Club passengers had their own Meet and Greet with the Captain and Senior Officers and enjoyed the "one-on-one" to ask questions.  The principal one was about Bridge visits which used to be a staple of the cruise industry.  Unfortunately, due to the catastrophe at Giglio, tightened security no  longer permits this option.  It was at this time that we met an Austrian-German couple, Carolina and Lucas Steurer, with hom we became fast, new friends and continued to enjoy their company, along with the Simonsson family for the remainder of the cruise.
Captain and Staff - Yacht Club - Meet and Greet

 Carolina and Lucas Steurer

Having partaked of exceptional hors d'oeuvres and champagne, we did not feel the desire for more food, even though Le Muse was calling.

Today was a totally relaxing at-sea day. Meeting new friends and enjoying “new” old friends by the One Pool Bar.  Low key was the true essence of the day, as Jeffrey continued to enjoy the quiet of the stateroom and the Aurea Spa.  Very zen-like!

The Spa is a large, unequalled space and well position within the ship (for Yacht Club passengers especially - two decks down by private access card) and offers a wide range of services, some truly exotic and some designed for couples too, and the treatments are at industry-comparable prices. The staff are dressed Balinese-style and this is a refreshing and soothing introduction.
Balinese Spa Ladies
Shopping is a great experience on board MSC DIVINA. There is a Pool Shop close by the Magrodome Pool for last minute needs while on the covered sections around the pool there are "special" daily experiences, with various products and at moderate prices.

The ship has a wide range of stores offering high end products like LaCoste, Tag Heuer and more.Down on the lower decks where the pricey, genuine, items are displayed is the aptly named Logo Store which has an excellent selection of MSC branded merchandise, such as caps, t-shirts, duffle bags and backpacks

Lucille at the Logo Store

Woofie appears to be ready for his next cruise

Being the inveterate traveler, I have ship models for most mainstream ships we have traveled on, so I just "had to" add to my collection.  The merchandise is suited as gifts, presents to one's self and also for children.  In addition, in the Candy Store, we found several wonderful, unusual gifts for our friends little girl, back home!

The show this evening was very invigoration with the cast and crew of “Simply Italian” reminisced about everything Italian but with a nod to the new level of camaradiere developing between MSC Cruises and its American expansion.  It can be said that the International mixture of passengers bring a new and unique perspective to cruising the Caribbean and it is a welcome change from same old, same old. The show tonite was a reflection of the ship’s prideful Italian heritage called SIMPLY ITALIAN reminsent of the “old” Home Lines, an earlier era of extraordinary cruising, now truly surpassed by MSC Cruises!

One of the Fabulous Production Shows

Dinner in La Muse was another “Italian twist.”  There was an appetizer of crab and a selection of meats from Eatally Restaurant, the obligatory fish dishes (turbot and salmon) and Risotto.   The menu also featured sliced beef which was beautifully prepared, though not to be compared with the exquisite carpaccio, which we also experienced another evening.  Next followed desserts which we exotic and flavorful, and to close, the obligatory by now, Lemoncello aperiff! To date I have not mentioned that for Yacht Club guests all “main stream" beverages are included, as well as wines by the glass from their private cellar - and they are exceptional. Also complimentary,  are soda, water coffees and the like, and best of all, there is not “chit” to sign for the service!  In addition, Yacht Club minibars are also complimentary   A group of us always lingered long after food was completed and it was a thoroughly enjoyable time.

Taking our “constitutional” walk back there was an impromptu Italian sing-along in the Atrium Lobby and it was packed with guests.  As we wandered further along, each venue was alive and vibrant with activity.  As a credit to MSC CRUISES, not one room was empty or quiet and it was truly refreshing to see this level of activity, particularly as on other vessels we have been aboard this past year, many rooms were dormant.  This ship if alive and filled with a truly vibrant spirit.

On our "walkabout" we noticed that the "Smurf Club" (as I call it) was still active for the young guests, some were napping as others were being collected by their parents.  Security here was, obviously, tight and it was well regimented.  The takeaway here is that adults can enjoy themselves without worry while the children are exeedingly happy and make new friends easily.

Later a small group of us returned to the serenity of the Top Sail Lounge for a nightcap and a very convivial chat.  The Europeans we have met aboard are intelligent, interesting and wonderful to converse with.  It is great to compare notes on similarities and differences around the world.  Of course, it does not hurt to accompany that conversation with a good after dinner beverage (cappuccino, expresso, or whatever, as the bar remains open until an astoundingly late hour, all for the benefit of the guests.  Try and find that on another cruise line!

DAY 4 - PHILIPSBURG (ST. MAARTEN)
The Captain said we would arrive at 9:00 AM, and as if on cue, we were docked right on time for tour departures that began at 9:00 AM.  We watched the ship arrive to join its already in port ship companions, two from Carnival and Norwegian’s NORWEGIAN BREAKAWAY for a total visitor count of some 16,000 guests. Our European friends, (with help from the Concierge Desk and Butlers) headed out to Malo Beach to watch the timely arrival of KLM’s 747 and other airliners arriving from various points around the world.  It was the highlight of the day for them

It was relatively overcast but we were able to make out the outline of Saba and St Barts through the haze.  Gradually the day cleared.  So after a fast and delicious breakfast at the outdoor pool bar comprising of smoked salmon, fresh fruit and the obligatory tomato egg and cheese omelet, we headed out for a visit into town to find an elusive wi-fi spot for the inevitable, mandatory phone calls and texts.  Except for Front Street now being basically pedestrian, almost not much in this town has changed.  The hawkers are still out in force but they are not the in-your-face style you often find in small, tourism-dependent communities.   Unfortunately, service was spotty at best and so tweets, Facebook and Instagram will have to be deferred until San Juan tomorrow.
Approach to St. Maaretn

Luncheon today, and it must be called that, was superb.  Two complimentary Heineken, chilled tomato bisque with croutons, followed by a Nicoise salad with fresh tuna, anchovies by the score, green beans, eggs and salad greens perfectly chilled. Simply divine and no dressing needed.

Nicoise Salad - generous with anchovies

Reuben Sandwich with Fried Onion and Pomme Fritte

And then, just for “good measure, I enjoyed one of the best Reuben sandwiches I have ever tasted.  This was a substitute for the New York cheesecake that I did not have!

While dining, our waiter, a personable young man named Pasquale who hails from Sorrento. Told me stories of him and friends spending nights in the bay of Sorrento catching anchovies during the full moon cycle.  What a joy and wonderful company but he and the team continued to cover all the bases with guests as they arrived at La Muse to dine in style.  Because it was a “port day,” there were just a few people enjoying the deck outside the restaurant and not the “intrusion” that some writers have commented upon.

Then it was back to the stateroom to change clothes and find a spot to enjoy the commerce that was happening around us as we waited for Tea in the Top Sail Lounge and sailing time.
After a “required nap” to recharge for body to respond to the heat and humidity of St Maarten, it was time to spend money, or so I thought!

Of I went to the gelateria for a (large) serving. I chose Passionfruit and tendered my charge card in payment, only to find that I was signing a “zero check.”  This too was complimentary!  I was thunderstruck, as I never expected this.  Once again, MSC Cruises has exceeded my (highest) expectations!  Next must come the Pistachio cake from the incredible Patiserie!  It has been looking at me since we boarded!

DAY 5 – SAN JUAN PUERTO RICO:

Approaching the Old Fort San Juan

Approaching the Old Fort San Juan

Easly arriving Cruise Ships

We arrived of the “old fort” around 6:30AM and made a couple of slow turns awaiting for the obligatory Pilot Boat to arrive.  Seas were choppy and probably uncomfortable for the Pilot but the seakeeping qualities of MSC DIVINA are remarkable and only an occasional rocking was felt.  We were the third of the day’s four ship contingent to dock and so the town was already a bustling place before we stepped ashore to be greeted by the resident hawkers plying us with those cheap (and not memorable souvenirs) that most people take home as “memories for their china cabinet.  A short walk around the streets adjacent to the ship was the extent of my travels as I had been in Puerto Rico many times and seen it all, as history never changes when it is that old!  This time, I must say that the streets were clean and free from the litter and trash of St Maarten.  Then it was back to the “ship within a ship” for lunch and more spoiling by an impressively attentive crew who never let up!

Lunch in Le Muse has become the daily staple. A chilled zucchini and pear soup followed by the most delightful tyme-infused roast veal and potatoes quaffed with several chilled Heineken made for a wonder repast before heading out on deck for a little sun and a beverage or two!

Aboard this ship the superlatives continue to roll out unabated.  For instance, There was a young man, maybe 7 or 8, who wanted to go to the waterslide.  A butler escorted the young man, stayed with him and returned him (unscathed) to his delighted parents.  There is an amazing children’s club that takes exceptional care of anyone from two to twenty.  Then, there are tournments, foosball, table-tennis and much, much more to keep them active and very happy.

Another special service has been provided with genuine care to an elderly French Countess who require major assists to get out and about.  She is personally escorted to dinner, enjoys herself and the Butler discreetly return, when she is ready to return to her room.  You will certainly not find this level of attention to passengers on any other line!

Countess Tara of Strausberg
The Countess was initially very shy at Dinner but the combination of our group, The Simonsson family, Steurer couple, ourselves and a non-English speaking, elegant Japanese couple seemed to give her such please that, by the time the cruise was over, she was "one with us" and blossomed.

We are going to send her informal pictures we have all taken. This speaks volumes about the camaraderie that develops within the Yacht Club environment and it is in great part a credit to the Maitre d'Hotel and the team in La Muse.

Yacht Club "Group"

Countess and "friends'

The shows continue to roll out each one better than the last.  Tonight was no exception.  It was forty-five minutes of action and acrobatics all revolving around “Captain Bob!”  Frankly, I was concerned that it might have been “a little dark” for some of the kids but I learned that they enthusiastically loved the performance!  I guess MSC really does know its guests and how to pamper them!  Silly me!

Dinners continue to be both fun and an exceptional, flavorful experience. I have read comments written that “portions are too small,” but when you have an exceptionally internationally influenced menu with many choices this can only be a positive and enjoyable experience!  Especially when you are dining in great company and you are 2-1/2 hours of repartee and unbelievable service!  Tonite, the Dinner selection included Beef Carpaccio, Caesar Salad and Duck.

While I had Ceasar Salad and Duck Breast, fellow Dinner guests (who have now become food connoisseurs, told me afterwards that the Monk-Lion Fish was the best they had ever experienced anywhere!  Maitre d’ Guiseppe aka Francisco and his team are truly wonderful.  Add to this their Italian heritage and it remains amazing.  MSC has perfected a level of service with its Yacht Club concept and delivery that it will remain a new, high industry standard for all to enjoy.

In the main part of the ship entertainment flows non-stop all day and all evening long and it is all unique and different.  Unlike other ships whose venues rotate from lively to dark, these here on MSC DIVINA there are active until the wee hours of the morning!  The deck-held "White Party" ranks in delivery as one of the best activities, and not just for the adult guests, it is all-inclusive.  As I have previously stated, the superlatives just keep coming.

DAY 5 –AT SEA
We are rolling on – not literally as the ship is extremely stable - towards to Bahamas enjoying a lazy day!  Breakfast on deck, morning tea in the Top Sail Lounge and off to Le Muse for luncheon, another bacchanal of truly fresh prawns (warmed and in a mild mustard-type sauce!  Delicious and so very unusual!  Plus, a wonderful, chilled fresh Cobb Salad (and a couple of Heineken!)  Then, not to be outdone the on-deck buffet at the Yacht Club's One Pool Bar brought out chilled giant prawns – virtually the same size as the offerings at Morton’s Steakhouse but not at “Morton’s prices!”  Here in this all inclusive environment, the selection was unending! Now, I have to ask, how much better does it get than this?  It, truly does not!

Now, it is time to enjoy the deck as the on-and-off showers seem to have passed by, or so the Captain has promised!

After cocktails we went to the superb MICHAEL JACKSON show.  It was truly fabulous, spectacular offering and it is no wonder why Porthole Magazine has rated MSC’s production shows as the overall best for 2014!  Unfortunately, my camera malfunctioned and so there is no records of the "award-winning" performance other than exceptional memories!

Dinner tonight was so extraordinary!  First is was Oysters Rockefeller AND (as a second appetizer) Fois Gras duck pate which was mouth wateringly succulent.  This was followed by some of our group with Caesar Salad with baby shrimp before the mouthwatering lobster and prime rib!  For dessert we were privileged to enjoy Cherries Jubilee and Baked Alaska. What a truly amazing dinner. To us, it is difficult to improve on perfection and ours was already beyond that scale and scope

With offerings as diverse and amazing, either fortunately (or unfortunately), none of "our group" did not attend any of the Specialty Restaurants on board, but we did have the chance to sample some of their that they made especially for Yacht Club guests.  The sample selections were incredible and, for me, appropriate in size so that you always have the option to enjoy a cornucopia of appetizers, soups, salads, pastas, desserts and cheese carts and more.  In addition, if there is an item (as a main course you desire – as an appetizer – just order it.!  Then, the obligatory cappuchino or espresso!  Finally, maybe even a liquer to complete the phenomena,l called dinner!
Lucas, Carolina and the Countess

Afterwards, we when to the Black and White lounge for the Karaoke but moved to the Atrium where the tenor (a passenger) sang beautifully,  Then it was on to the Top Sail Lounge for a nightcap before retiring.

DAY 7 – GREAT STIRRUP CAY!

Tenders at the ready for shore

After anchoring off the “beach island” the efficient tender service began in quite an historic way!  The island is owned by another cruise line – and I am sure MSC Cruises pays for the privilege of using the island.  All food, beverage and supplies are landed using an old landing barge that is piled high with every conceivable item needed and it moves off to shore while passengers obtain tender tickets and are called by group to board.. yes, here I will say it, the two large, original tenders that were so noticeable aboard the historic ss FRANCE (that became the ss NORWAY.  They still bear the same signage from their former identities.

ssNORWAY Tender - still working

ssNORWAY Tender - still working

Sun-baked travelers returning

We are now getting close to reality.  The last newspaper has been delivered.  The baggage tags have been delivered and, after one final “fresh squeezed” orange juice and Eggs Benedict, it was time to begin the packing.  We have been told that tomorrow morning we will meet for Continental Breakfast at 7:15AM and then be escorted off. Boo Hoo!

We have taken care of the staff (with well-earned gratuities), expressing our grateful thanks for an enthusiastic job truly well-done and an assurance that we WILL all be back (in the Yacht Club).

There is a variety of activities, food and beverage stations and a wide expanse of snorkeling area that received excellent reviews from returning passengers.  In the distance on a neighboring, remote island, I have no doubt that the passengers from another cruise line were probably enjoying a lesser experience than MSC Passengers.

Another extravagant lunch was enjoyed in La Muse. With the wish for many more of these fine  dining experiences in the not to distant future,as we return to packing for the inevitable next day departure and life's realities.

Tonight, as has been the case all week, Late Seating passengers see the Production show aptly named TRIBUTE that recognized the importance of Opera to Italians.  From lesser known arias to the most popular, and even more extravagant period costumes, it was a “known” surprise as word of mouth had preceded this show as “something to be experienced.”  Though the attendance was less than previous shows, the Pantheon Theater, it was about three quarters full or about 2500 guests.

After closing remarks, Cruise Director Andre Schlemmer, from South Africa, announced the final “all-in” bingo game with a phenomenal purse that would “probably pay for the next cruise for the winner!  It was that big!

Cruise Director Andre

Tonight at dinner our marvelous, flamboyant restaurant Maitre d’Hotel Guiseppe (whom I called Francisco for most of the cruise – oops!) surprised us with a truly out-of-this-world, delicious  Italian Fettuccini Alfredo that received a standing ovation and a visit from the MSC DIVINA’s Executive Chef who personally prepared the dish, as we reminisced about the superb cuisine that is so reminding of the days of Home Lines, circa 1960, where cuisine was the mandatory centerpiece (along with true Italian entertainment,)  Thank heaven that old is so back in vogue here on MSC DIVINA.
Maitre d Guiseppe

There are so many people that we should acknowledge for the roles they played in making this cruise, but regrettably, my have lost my name list!

DAY 8 – RETURNING TO MIAMI

Shortly after five a.m. MSC DIVINA glided up the channel towards her berth.  A slow turn close to downtown Miami where the night lights on the Inter-Continental Hotel beckoned with exotic dancers gyrating and a virtually empty port that would soon fill with a number of ships exchanging passengers.
.
After watching the arrival spectacle and getting dressed, we headed to the Top Sail Lounge for a few minutes with new-found friends, one final fresh-squeezed orange juice and Continental Breakfast served by our till ever-attentive butler service.  The, reluctantly, we were taken on a final escorted with to the Gangway by our Butler.  A final “Goodbye,” and we were back on terrafirma and under our own resources.

All too soon, we were dockside and, the luggage we placed outside of our room, had miraculously disappeared only to reappear on the massive U.S. Customs Hall where after the required Homeland/INS inspections, our joyful experience was complete and we were, regrettably back to reality!  This dream had ended but not without new friends and truly incredible memories.

CLOSING REMARKS:

This is an exceptional ship in every way!  For Yacht Club guests, it is an unequaled "way to cruise."
The truly exceptional service dates back to the times when ocean liners were truly in vogue. The outstanding cuisine of the Yacht Club is unparalleled.  The "true" Butler Service is beyond compare and, finally the overall standard of service is beyond compare.  Crew members genuinely care about each and every guest and their needs, wants and desires, just like in a family.  The superlatives that
come to mind are beyond comparison.

Now all we need to do is support this extraordinary Company and its team and await the 2017 arrival of the MSC SEASIDE in Miami.
